Off-season expectations/hopes for PSU are the highest since ’99, but that year came up short of meeting them.
The majority of the starters are back from last year’s team, although the top WR and LB must be replaced. The top cover CB was likely lost for the season during spring practices also. LB play could be an issue as that position has not had the quality or quantity of recruits since the sanctions.
There are a couple things from last year that are keeping my expectations in check. Never thought I’d see my team score 39 and lose. Then they topped that in the bowl game with an almost unbelievable 49 in a loss. Toss in the multiple multi TD deficit comebacks, and we’ll just have to see how well it goes.
The schedule has Michigan, at tOSU, and at MSU in succession, which won’t be a picnic. A couple road games at Iowa and Northwestern are also potential land mines. I am expecting wins over Pitt and NU at home. But, I’m sure I’ll be nervous before all of these and more.
I’d be happy to sign up right now for a 1-loss season (including bowl win) and what happens with the playoff invites, happens. I didn’t have a problem with the invites last year, and with the precedent that was set regarding records/conference championships, kind of hoping it goes in my team’s favor this year.
As far as the opening weekend, or this week at least, the Bama-FSU game doesn’t have the same feel as it should. There is not one part of me that thinks the loser of the game doesn’t control their destiny in being mnc at the end of things. As much as I preferred the 4 team playoff, I miss that feeling of “do or die”.
Hope you guys have been well.
